Ok so I will admit, I have seen 2001 twice, and both times I found myself grasping desperately to whatever meaning and symbolism I could find.
I recently Stumbled Upon a site that explains it all. The movie makes so much more sense now. So if your curious and have always wanted to know what the heck ""2001 a Space Odyssey" really means go here.

It's just a setting for an LSD trip.
I have to disagree with this one. There is no question that 2001 is a pretty trippy movie, but there are layers of meaning that extend beyond the realm random hallucination. There is a lot of meaning encoded into Kuberick's masterpiece.
